The Fuchsia triphylla, sometimes referred to in English as coral fuchsia, is a species of the genus Fuchsia ( Fuchsia) in the family Onagraceae ( Onagraceae ).

Appearance

Fuchsia triphylla is a small shrub, reaching heights of growth of 40 to 60 centimeters. His terminal, racemose inflorescences contain bright coral red flowers.

Discovery history and significance for the fuchsias breeding

Fuchsia triphylla was discovered in 1695 by the Paulaner monk and botanist Charles Plumier and 1703 scientifically described. In the name they ultimately Fuchsia or the German fuchsias for this species is declining.

Plumiers copies were lost in a shipwreck, only his written descriptions of the plant species were the basis for the first scientific description. Fuchsia triphylla could then no longer be found for several decades. Only the botanist Thomas Hook was 1873 again plants were first cultivated in the Botanical Garden in New York. From there, they then came to Kew Gardens in England.

Triphylla hybrids are now often offered on the market. Carl Bonstedt bred from this parent plant the first " traubenblütigen " fuchsias.
