Fuchskaute

The Fuchskaute is an extinct volcano and 657.3 m above sea level. NHN is the highest mountain of the Westerwald and the Westerwald district in Rhineland- Palatinate.

The name Fuchskaute refers to a place where the fox has its Munching ( foxhole ).

Geography

Location

In High Westerwald, a plateau of belonging to the Rhenish Slate Mountains Westerwald, the Fuchskaute rises about halfway straight line between Bad Marienberg in the west and in the east Breitscheidstraße in the district Willingen. At its eastern slope of the boundary with Hesse, and those to North Rhine-Westphalia is located a few kilometers north. Less than 3 km north-northeast is the border triangle of Hesse, North Rhine -Westphalia and Rhineland- Palatinate. At their flanks heights are several rivers, among them the Nister ( Big Nister ).

Nature Spatial allocation

The Fuchskaute heard in the main physiographic unit group Westerwald (No. 32) and in the main unit Hoher Westerwald (322 ) for subunit Westerwald basaltic plateau ( 322.0 ).

Geology

The Fuchskaute is as extinct volcano part of a basalt plateau.

Mountain height

The Fuchskaute has two approximately 650 meters away from each other summits - with heights in meters ( m) above mean sea level ( MSL ): the northern dome ( 656.4 m) and the Südkuppe ( 657.3 m), with the latter in two some 175 m spaced hills divides, namely in the Nordanhöhe ( 657.3 m) and the Südanhöhe ( 656.5 m).

Reserves

On the eastern flank of the mountain up high on the southern of its two summits taking place for the protection of heathland nature reserve Fuchskaute ( NSG-Nr. 163164 ), which was founded in 1984 and is 40.16 ha. The southern areas of the mountain are part of the bird sanctuary Hoher Westerwald ( VSG-Nr. 5314-450 ).

Fauna and Flora

On and on the basalt plateau of Fuchskaute the harsh climate and a traditional way of grazing meadows have let arise, as they are typical for the Alps. Nearly 300 flowering plants and tree species, 300 butterfly and nearly 50 different bird species have been recorded here.

Tourism

There is a cross-country skiing area with groomed trails at the Fuchskaute. By 1975 (or 1980) found there regularly with motorcycles dirt track races. Because of the pollution they have been set.

In the vicinity of Fuchskaute there are about 250 km in length on well marked trails that lead, among other things the nature reserves " Wacholderheide " in the Holzbachschlucht and Krombachtalsperre. About the Fuchskaute also extend the Westerwaldsteig and the southern loop of the Rothaarsteig.

Previously was on the Fuchskaute an observation tower, from which one could enjoy, among others, the view in the Westerwald.

The amateur radio service operates two radio towers on the Südkuppe the Fuchskaute.
