Fudai daimyo

The Fudai - daimyo (Japanese谱 代 大名) were a class of feudal lords ( daimyo ) during the Edo period in Japan. These included those who were vassals of the Tokugawa before the decisive battle of Sekigahara.

The Fudai - daimyo were, as they had voluntarily joined the Tokugawa before the battle, as a reliable and loyal as the only added later tozama - daimyo. Only the Shimpan - daimyo were as immediate relatives of the Tokugawa closer.

As a hereditary vassal of the Tokugawa often reigned in contrast to the tozama - daimyo only small fief, but often in a strategically important location along the main roads or in the Kanto region near the headquarters of the Tokugawa shogunate in Edo.

High offices in the shogunate, as Roju and Wakadoshiyori were usually awarded to Fudai. Important examples of such families are the clans of the Ii and Doi.
