Fuertes's Parrot

Chapmans dwarf warrior ( Hapalopsittaca fuertesi ) or sometimes Fuertespapagei is a parrot species from Colombia. It was rediscovered in 2002 and is extremely rare.

Chapmans dwarf Amazons reach a length of about 24 centimeters. They are mainly green colored, but with numerous colorful Einsprenkelungen. An orange-red spot, the forehead is yellow, the crown is blue above the beak. The shoulders are red, the wings predominantly blue-green. On the belly there is a red spot, the tail is also red and ends in a purple top.

These parrots come in front of the Andes in Colombia only in a small area on the western slope. Their habitat are cloud forests, usually they keep 2900-3150 meters height. About the lifestyle and diet, little is known, maybe they feed on berries.

Chapmans dwarf Amazone was first described in 1912 and was followed for decades to be lost. In 2002, a small group of these birds was rediscovered, and protective measures were initiated. Nevertheless, the birds are very rare, the total population is estimated at 100 to 250 animals. The IUCN lists the species as " threatened with extinction " ( critically endangered ).
