Fujiwara no Umakai

Fujiwara no Umakai (Japanese藤原 宇 合, also:藤原 马 养; * 694, † September 3 737 ) was a Japanese statesman, general and poet.

The son of Fujiwara no Fuhito was sent 716 as vice ambassador to China. He was governor of the province Hitachi 719 and inspector of Governors of the provinces of Awa, Kazusa and Shimousa. 724 he became Minister of Ceremonies (式 部 卿, Shikibu - kyō ) at the imperial court. In the year 731 he was appointed Advisor (参议, sangi ) and in the following year he was appointed Governor-General of the provinces on Kyūshū (西海 道 节度使, Saikaidō setsudoshi of Chinese Jiedushi ) appointed.

Like his brothers Fujiwara no Muchimaro, Fujiwara no Fusasaki and Fujiwara no Maro fell Umakai 737 a smallpox epidemic victims. At the time of his death he served as a counselor, minister of ceremonies, Governor General of Dazaifu (大 宰 帅, Dazai no sochi / sotsu ) and held the third real court rank.

With his brothers, he is the founder of the four "houses" of the Fujiwara family. His was Shiki - ke called (式 家).

Some poems Umakais have survived in the Man'yōshū collection, another in the collection of Chinese poems Kaifuso.
