Fukuoka-Marathon

The Fukuoka Marathon (Japanese福岡 国際 マラソン, Fukuoka Kokusai Marason, " International Marathon Fukuoka ."; Official engl designation Fukuoka International Open Marathon Championship ) is a marathon in Fukuoka for the male elite runners, held since 1947, generally beginning December. It is organized by the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations, the newspaper Asahi Shimbun, the television network TV Asahi and the local stations Kyushu Asahi Hoso (English Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting)

History

1947 running as Asahi Marathon was launched. The Erstaustragung was held in Kumamoto, home of the "Father of the Japanese marathon " revered Shiso Kanaguri. Until 1958 the venue changed annually.

1954 took part for the first time athletes from abroad. Accordingly, the name of the run in Asahi International Marathon has been changed.

1957 had the race for the first time, as now, the Heiwadai Stadium in Fukuoka as a starting point and destination. With the exception of 1963, when the competition in Tokyo on the marathon course of the Olympic Games of 1964 took place, he was always oriented from 1959 in Fukuoka.

In 1966, the event was renamed in consultation with the IAAF in International Marathon Championships. The idea behind the course was then to determine the world's best marathon runners of the year to the end of the year. This concept worked because from 1966 to 1968 was three times in a row Weltjahresbestzeit in Fukuoka run (after a total of five times: 1972, 1977, 1981, 1987 and 1993). 1967 broke Derek Clayton was the first runner ever the 2:10:00 barrier, and Robert De Castella presented in 1981 the second way past Fukuoka world record.
