Full-court press

The Ganzfeld Press (English: full -court press) is a defense tactic in basketball.

Normally, the defensive formation builds up in their own half of the pitch. In the Ganzfeld Press this formation is extended to the entire court to put the opponents under pressure. Here, the shot clock plays a crucial role since the opponent has only 24 seconds to complete with a litter, the full field press can reinforce this time pressure by suffocates the playmaking in the bud.

This tactic is especially useful in the following cases:

  • The opposing point guard is weak and prone to errors during intense defensive pressure.
  • The defending team is superior in strength and speed and has many strong substitutes available, so that these strenuous defense is possible.
  • The opposing team is ahead and there is little time (eg, 2 minutes). To win the game yet, the ball must be captured as soon as possible.
