Free bang acid, also known as Fulminsäure, is a toxic, decomposable gas from penetrating odor with the empirical formula HCNO. It is a Cyansauerstoffsäure, ie chemically considered an oxide of hydrogen cyanide.

History and Structure

Justus von Liebig discovered the bang acid 1824 and formulated them as H2C2N2O2. The isomeric cyanic acid was Friedrich Wohler a year later. Roland Scholl determined in 1891 the structure by reactions in which rearranges to bang acid derivatives of cyanuric acid. Furthermore proved her cleavage in formic acid and hydroxylamine apparently the oxime character ( carbon monoxide - oxime ) the bang acid as HONC and contradicted the postulated by Kekule form O2NCH2CN, the Nitroacetonitrils. Recent structural studies then showed the linear structure of the molecule as HCNO (analogous to hydrogen cyanide HCN), with a CN triple bond, whereas the isomeric Isoknallsäure HONC is angled.

Representation

Bang acid can be prepared by treating an aqueous solution of Natriumfulminat with dilute sulfuric acid under ice cooling.

Properties

Bang acid is isomeric to Isoknallsäure ( HONC ) to cyanic acid ( HOCN ) and isocyanic acid ( HNCO ). The colorless, poisonous pop acid is only stable at low temperatures and readily polymerizes to Diisocyansäure. The salts of the acid are called bang fulminate.

Use

For the free acid or industrial use is known. Fulminate as the mercury fulminate ( fulminate of mercury ) and silver fulminate ( silver fulminate ) is available through its highly explosive detonators as for other explosives use.
