Fumone

Fumone is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Lazio, 2142 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 82 km east of Rome and 17 km northwest of Frosinone.

Geography

Fumone located in the Monti Ernici on top of a characteristic cone-shaped mountain. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Ernici.

History

Fumone was according to legend, at the time of the last Roman king Tarquinius Superbus, which should be forth fled after his fall 509 BC here.

Both in antiquity and in the Middle Ages, fortified town was an important outpost of Rome.

1295 until his death in 1296, Pope Celestine V was imprisoned by his successor Boniface VIII in Fumone.

In the 17th century the castle came to the family Longhi, in whose possession it is today.

Attractions

In the castle is a museum housed with archaeological finds. In addition, you can see the cell was caught in the Celestine V. To the castle is a baroque garden was created in the 17th century.
