The Funariaceae are a family of mosses ( Bryophyta ) and include about 250 species occurring worldwide.

Features

The Moose are very small to medium in size and usually grow annuals or small cushions on the ground. You are akrokarp and usually have large central strands. The protonema is short-lived. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate. The lamina cells are large, loose and smooth and rectangular to hexagonal. The Seta is usually elongated, straight or curved. The ovate to elliptic capsules are sunk to pre-stretched, erect or curved, symmetrical to highly asymmetrical. The spores are of variable form, the calyptra is large, typically lobed and cut or miter -shaped.

Occurrence

The world's occurring Funariaceae grow primarily on nutrient- rich sites, but always terrestrial.
