Fundulea

Fundulea is a town in the district Calarasi in Wallachia region of Romania.

Location

Fundulea located in the Great Wallachia 35 km east of the provincial capital, Bucharest, on the upper reaches of the river Mostiştea. The county town Calarasi is located about 75 km south-east.

History

The first written mention of the village was in 1778 that the now eingemeindeten place Gostilele already 1583rd Fundulea has long been dominated by agriculture. In the 19th century, Bulgars settled, assimilated in a very short time.

In the 1920s the poet Mateiu Caragiale owned a farm in Fundulea. After the end of World War II Fundulea site of the Institute for Agricultural Research and Development was ( INDCA ).

1989 Fundulea was appointed to the city. The main economic activities are agriculture and the chemical industry.

Population

1930 lived on the territory of the present town of approximately 2,800 people. As of the 2002 census, 6,691 inhabitants were counted in the city, including 6,192 Romanians and 497 Roma. Approximately 5,800 lived in Fundulea itself, the other in the two incorporated villages.

Traffic

Fundulea lies on the railway line from Bucharest to Constanta. In both directions currently operate (2009) about five commuter trains daily; Fast trains do not stop in Fundulea station. South of the city run the A2 motorway and the National Road 3 from Bucharest to Constanta. There are regular bus services to Bucharest, Calarasi.
