Fundulopanchax

Gardners Killifish ( Fundulopanchax gardneri )

Fundulopanchax is a genus of freshwater fish from the group of Prachtkärpflinge in the family Nothobranchiidae. The scientific name refers to the supposed relationship between the genera Fundulus and Panchax ( no longer valid), a view which is now considered obsolete.

Distribution area

The distribution area covers the coastal plain of West Africa from the Ivory Coast to Equatorial Guinea.

Features

Fundulopanchax species have an elongated body and are extremely colorful in most cases. At the height of the caudal peduncle they are higher than other Prachtkärpflingsgattungen. Their body length is 2.5 to 13 cm. The dorsal fin is longer than in Aphyosemion and the swim bladder does not reach past the first Hämalbogen. Around the caudal peduncle have Fundulopanchax species 16 ( except subgenus Paludopanchax ) or more scales. Your otoliths show a unique morphology. The dorsal fin is supported by 14 or more fin rays ( except subgenus Pauciradius ).

System

Fundulopanchax was originally as a subgenus of Aphyosemion and in 1981 became charged by Parentin in the genus rank and subgenera Gulariopanchax, Paludopanchax and Paraphyosemion in Fundulopanchax integrated. The monophyly of the genus has been confirmed by molecular genetic studies.
