Furfuryl alcohol is a chemical compound selected from the group of the alcohols, oxygen and substituted heterocycles. It is derived from furan and differs from it by an additional hydroxymethyl group.

Production and representation

Furfuryl alcohol formed during disproportionation of furfural, where 2 - furoic acid is produced.

Properties

Furfuryl alcohol is a colorless to clear yellow liquid with a faint pungent odor. Upon contact with air or light, the compound turns brown to reddish brown. It is soluble in many organic solvents (e.g., ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene ) but insoluble in paraffin. The connection is varied responsive. There are possible esterification, etherification, polycondensation, deposits and other reactions.

Use

Furfuryl alcohol is used as solvent for the preparation of furan and wetting agents and, more recently, for the chemical modification of wood.

Safety

The vapors of furfuryl alcohol can form (75 ° C, ignition temperature 390 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
