Breeding history

The breed originated in the stud Mezőhegyes mid-19th century. In this center of the Hungarian half-breed breeding the stud directors tried to comply with a selection of promising thoroughbred stallions the need for cavalry horses by the mating of the mare existing portfolio ( mare families with Mecklenburg, Trakehner, Transylvanian and Nóniusz descent).

In 1841 was senior Furioso, one of the two founding fathers and international namesake of the race, placed in Mezöhegyes. Furioso senior was a brown thoroughbred, in 1836 saw the light of day in the stud of Count György Károlyi. Father's side he was drawn connecting the famous Herod Eclipse; his father Private won numerous races in Britain and in the k & k monarchy. Furiosos mother Miss Fury also had a first-class parentage, her father Whalebone was also made of the Eclipse line. The racing success of the stallion Furioso in Hungary were no surprise at this origin. The breeding potential of an undefeated stallion should be tested in Mezőhegyes after his racing career in the Half-Blood breeding; he was the stud for ten years available. His descendants - 95 colts and 81 fillies - attention not only by high nobility and a correct building, but also by a remarkable physical stability compared with the offspring of other stallions.

The black horse Northstar senior was born in 1844 on the thoroughbred stud of Lord Fitzwilliam in England. His father Jaques - half brother of the famous Newminster - and his mother were both Ringlet of the Eclipse line. Northstar was erected from 1853 to 1861 in Mezőhegyes. His descendants (53 colts and 61 fillies ) were rather fine, large and very persistent. Because of their late maturation process, they were particularly fond paired with the faster growing, robust Furioso offspring. Despite minor differences, the line founder and Furioso North Star horses were quite similar. They not only had a similar origin, they were regarding character, building size and the same type of English thoroughbred.

The descendants of the two founding stallions were bred in Mezöhegyes and after a few generations, the separation into two tribes was completed with two genealogical lines. The systematic rotation of the selected stallions from four lines ( Furioso "A" Furioso "B" North Star "A" North Star "B") brought the necessary genetic variability.

From the race Furioso - North Star you can speak at the earliest from 1867. In the subsequent consolidation phase, the race was marked by an increasing uniformity in type, color and character.

The breeding base of race is currently very low, but appears to be after the low point in the 1980s to recover. In Hungary, only 500 breeding mares and stallions are 80 registered. The genetic variability of breeding animals is sufficient for preservation of the breed.
