Fusidic acid is a tetracyclic triterpenic with a 29 - Nordammaran backbone ( Fusidan ) from the fungus Fusidium coccineum that forms a bacteriostatic antibiotic by binding to an elongation factor (EF -G) protein synthesis at the bacterial ribosome.
Application
It is used mainly against infections of the skin and eyes due to staphylococci locally, but can also be administered as a tablet or infusion systemically.
Fusidic acid acts except for staphylococci on Neisseria, Clostridium, and Corynebacterium. Fusidic acid is not effective in gram-negative bacteria.
Fusidic acid also reaches well in bones and joints; it is metabolized in the liver and excreted via the bile.
