The Futapass (Italian Passo della Futa ) crossed the Apennines in the province of Florence in the community Firenzuola at a height of 903 meters.

Geography

The mountain pass is located between the valley of the Sieve in the Mugello near Barberino di Mugello and the valley of Santerno, an important tributary of the Reno, which rises near the Futaberges and, after Firenzuola in the province of Bologna. The above Futapass leading Strada Statale 65 connects the cities of Florence and Bologna. At the time of the Roman Empire led the Via Flaminia (also Via Flaminia militare or Via Flaminia minor called ) over the pass. Northeast of Futapasses is the Passo della Raticosa ( Firenzuola), southeast of Passo del Giogo ( border between Firenzuola and Scarperia e San Piero ).

History

During the Second World War, the Gothic Line had been built in the area of the pass important fortifications. In April 1945, there was still fierce fighting. In the 1950s the German military cemetery Futapass was directly applied to the ball. With 30,683 dead buried, it is the largest German military cemetery in Italy.

Sports

The Futapass since the inaugural tournament is already in 1927 the route of the legendary Mille Miglia automobile race.
