Futuna Island, Vanuatu

Futuna is a small island ( about 13 sq km land area) in the southeast of the island nation of Vanuatu. Located in the province of Tafea island lies 310 km ( straight line ) from the Vanuatu capital Port Vila and 101 km from the much larger island of Tanna away. Between 1999 and 2009 the population increased from 402 to 535.

Futuna is bordered to the east by a coral reef.

There are five villages Futuna:

  • Iasoa
  • Ipao
  • Matin'gi
  • Napoua
  • Mohoun'gha

Capital is Mohoun'gha in the northwest. Ipao in the northeast is just west of the airport.

The island has ten traditional regions: Iraro, Itapapa, Itapasiesi, Matangi, Matowei, Nabão, Nariari, Rakaoroa, Serinao, and Tchinaroa.
