G. Johannes Botterweck

Gerhard Johannes Botterweck ( born April 25, 1917 in Reydt, † April 15, 1981 in Bonn) was a German theologian, an Old Testament scholar and multi- Dean of the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

Life and work

Botterweck studied philosophy, Catholic theology and Oriental Studies in Frankfurt and Vienna. In 1944 he received his doctorate in Vienna Dr. phil. and was ordained a priest in the same year. As a military chaplain on the Eastern Front, he lost a leg in World War II. He was chaplain and religion teacher in Viersen ( Diocese of Aachen ). 1950 was followed by the doctorate in theology. 1953 Habilitation in Bonn. From 1953 to 1959 he was professor of Old Testament at Tübingen from 1960 to 1981 in Bonn. His scientific interests were concerned with the semantics and the Philology of the biblical languages ​​, the social criticism of the prophets and the theology of the Psalms.

Among the students of Botterweck are Heinz -Josef Fabry, Manfred Görg, Erich Kettenhofen, Josef Plöger and Franz-Josef Stendebach.
