Gabbai

A Gabbai (Hebrew גבאי of gbh, raise; vulgar: Gabbe ) is the name of a Jewish person whose office it is to support the synagogue operation to be of service. This includes in particular the support of the expiry of the Jewish synagogue services. In addition, the personal assistant of a rabbi is referred to as Gabbai, particularly the secretary or personal assistant to a Hassidic Rebbe. The obligations of a Gabbai include the possible organization of Jewish funerals.

In many synagogues the office of a Gabbai is not a permanent commitment, but a transient during the Torah (Hebrew קריאת התורה, K'riat HaTorah, " ( pre-) reading of the Torah ").
