Gábor Demszky

Gábor Demszky [ ɡa ː bor dɛmski ] (* August 4, 1952 in Budapest) is a Hungarian politician. The lawyer and sociologist, was from 31 October 1990 to October 3, 2010 Lord Mayor of Budapest. Before the fall of the Iron Curtain was Demszky publisher and editor of Samisdatschriften.

Demszky is a member of the Hungarian Liberals ( SZDSZ, Szabad Demokraták Szövetsége ). In addition to his role as Lord Mayor of Budapest, he was from 2000 to 2001 for one and a half years is also chairman of his party.

Demszky studied from 1970 to 1976 Jura. During this time he was part of a left opposition students circle and had to interrupt his studies 1972-1973. A job as a lawyer was denied him; he was an employee of the newspaper until 1979 Világosság and studied sociology. After his signing of Charter 77 and involvement in oppositional projects Demszky was released in Világosság and got an exit and publication ban.

In the following years he worked for small publishers.
