Gabriel Anrep

Johan Gabriel Anrep ( born December 4, 1821 in Lekeberg, † March 12, 1907 in Stockholm) was a Swedish genealogist and founder of modern nobility research in Sweden.

Life

Gabriel Anrep came from the Baltic German noble family of the lords of Anrep. His parents were Johan Wilhelm Anrep († 1848) and Maria Margareta Palin. He grew up on his father's estate in Lekeberg. Following the sale of Lekeberg Anrep lived in Stockholm and devoted himself to his publishing business. In 1855 he had Maria Christina Carlson ( * 1822, † 1891), married.

The research and publication of performance Anreps consisted primarily, not only to collect the genealogies of the Swedish nobility, but also to investigate using scientific methods and to exempt them from mythical origins. Nevertheless, he was partly forced by the affected families and the Knight house, to be used as untenable proven filiations only when he published this also unchanged. This in turn was subsequently interpreted as legitimizing the lineage, since this was published by the standing than in good standing, well-versed Anrep. Adam Lewenhaupt and even more Gustaf Elgenstierna later took the work Anreps on. The latter was able to successfully continue this after he managed to emancipate itself from the families and the knighthood.
