Gabriel Ferry

Gabriel Ferry, actually Eugène Louis Gabriel Ferry de Belle Mare ( born November 29, 1809 in Grenoble, † January 5, 1852 in the sinking of the passenger ship Amazon) was a French novelist and writer of adventure novels.

Life and work

Gabriel Ferry, and the French called Cooper, stayed from 1831 to 1837 mainly in Mexico and then returned to his native France. His most famous work, Le Coureur de Bois, he published in 1850. More Wild West novels were Costal l' India, Les Gambusinos and Les Squatters, but this soon fell into oblivion. He was only 42 years old in the sinking of the passenger ship Amazon at a new crossing to America died. The American steam ship was on its way to California when it went through a lightning strike to fire and sank in the English Channel. Also 400 German emigrants are said to have been found on board. Le Coureur de Bois was edited under the title The Ranger 1879 by Karl May "for the youth."
