Gabriel Gustafson
Gabriel Adolf Gustafson ( born August 8, 1853 in Visby, Gotland, † April 16, 1915 in Kristiania ) was a Swedish archaeologist.
In 1871 he began studying at Uppsala University and led by its successful conclusion 1877-1888 through a series of excavations and studies in Sweden. From 1889 to 1900 he was curator at the University of Bergen in Bergen ( Norway). On September 29, 1900, he became head of the Oldsakssamlingen (Antiquity collections ) in Oslo, and professor at the Faculty. He became known worldwide for its excavation, together with the Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig, the Oseberg ship in the years 1904-1905 in Tønsberg on the Oslo Fjord in Norway.
Gustafson was among others in 1911 with the St. Olav Medal ( Knight 1st class) and in 1907 was awarded a honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala.
