He was a graduate of the French Military Academy of Saint- Cyr and fought for France in World War II in Indochina. In Madagascar's independence, in 1960, he returned to his homeland. Of 11 October 1972 to 5 February 1975, he was President of Madagascar and 18 May 1972 to February 5, 1975 Prime Minister of Madagascar.
