Gabriel Terra

Gabriel Terra Leivas ( born August 1, 1873 in Montevideo, † September 15, 1942 ) was a Uruguayan politician and president of the country from 1931 until 1938.

Born in Montevideo, the son of the eminent economist José L. Terra, he studied until 1895 Law at the Universidad de la República. He began his career with the Colorado and held under José Batlle y Ordóñez in 1925 the Office of the Minister of Industry and Labour. 1930 Terra was elected by the Congress president, the post he took up in 1931. On March 31, 1933, he declared himself dictator for a coup. He dissolved the national Board of Directors and the legislative powers that limited his power on. He issued in 1934 a new constitution and set himself on in the election for president. He won the election on suspicion of fraud. Terra soon began to make the most of social reforms of his predecessor undone and brutally suppressed in 1935 a revolt against his regime.

Family

Terra's daughter Raquel Terra was married to the politician Alberto Puig Larravide. Their son Daniel Puig Terra, Gabriel Terra's grandson, was the early 1990s, a deputy of the Cámara de Representantes.
