Gabriel von Hackl

Gabriel (of ) Hackl ( born March 24, 1843 in Maribor, † June 5, 1926 in Munich) was a German painter of historicism.

Life and work

Hackl was born in 1843 the son of a surgeon. He spent his school years at the gymnasium of his native town and at the Municipal School in Graz. At his father's request, he studied at the University of Vienna anatomy, archeology and drawing. In 1865 he went to Munich to study at the Academy of Fine Arts under Alexander Wagner and Carl Theodor von Piloty. He then took a position at the Munich School of Applied Arts. He was with Sophie von Hackl, nee Schmid, married.

In 1878 he became professor and head of the character class at the Munich Art Academy, a position he held until 1919. He was among other colleague of Franz von Stuck and Wilhelm von Diez. Hackl was a member of the group founded in 1896 Luitpold, a spin-off of the Munich Artists' Association, which also included the painter Hugo BÜRGEL Walter Firle, Fritz Baer, ​​Karl Marr, Johann Sperl and Wilhelm Leibl. Through his teachings promoted by Hackl numerous well-known artists in their work, but had his own work with no lasting success. Today, the artist's works are occasionally offered at the auction trade.
