Gabriel Wuger

Gabriel (Jacob ) Wüger ( born December 2, 1829 in Steckborn the submarine in the canton of Thurgau, † May 31, 1893 in Monte Cassino ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk and painter.

Life

Wüger was born as the son of wealthy parents in Reformed Steckborn. He first visited in La Neuveville the gymnasium, where his artistic talent was discovered and he took from then on one of his drawing teacher private lessons. When his father finally agreed to an artistic career, Gabriel Strangler attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he completed his studies with Wilhelm von Kaulbach ( 1847-1852 ). In 1856 he went to Dresden, where he continued his studies of the great masters such as Rubens or Veronese. After a brief stint in Munich, where he was able to sell one of his works, he visited his relatives and stayed from 1858 to 1860 in Steckborn on. Beginning of 1860 he moved to Nuremberg, in 1862, finally to Florence, where he presented the painter Amos Cassioli a place in his studio.

During his stay in Rome in 1862 he converted to Catholicism. He was decisively influenced by the art of the Nazarenes. In 1869 he was commissioned to execute the frescoes in the Archabbey Beuron, which he executed in 1868 and 1869 in the summers of the years, he also provided the exterior walls of a monastic residence next to the Chapel of St. Maurus in the field with pictures. He became one of the founders of Beuronese art school. After completing his work at St. Martin's Chapel at Monte Cassino Wüger died in 1893 and was buried there.
