Gabriel Zehender

Gabriel Zehender (* probably in the 16th century in the United Mausdorf; † may 1535 in Basel ) was a German or Swiss artist.

Life

Activity of the painter is to provide evidence for the period 1527-1535 in the areas of the present Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland. A guild book entry from 1529 suggests that he was at that time already based in Basel; In 1535 he is there, however, referred to as a refugee.

Maybe Gabriel Zehender was identical to the monogramist GZ, the order from 1516 to 1521 in the Upper and Middle Rhine worked at the time and worked as a draftsman for the topiary in this time; However, it could also be involved father and son. This Monogrammist GZ was close to Hans Baldung Grien and has with his drawing Mary and John before Christ on the Cross, which was built around 1520 and is now in possession of the British Museum, may be set to track down a lost painting Matthias Grünewald.

The painter Hans Zehender, who died in 1570, might have been related to Gabriel Zehender, see also Johann Kaspar Zehender

Works

Gabriel Zehender is known as a draftsman and painter, especially through his portrait of a married couple, painted with oil paint on pine wood and is 40.9 x 51.5 cm. This portrait was temporarily interpreted as a portrait of Martin Luther and his wife, but this was rejected. It is now in the Museo Thyssen- Bornemisza in Madrid.
