Gabriel Zubeir Wako

Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako ( born February 27, 1941 in Mboro, Sudan ) is Archbishop of Khartoum.

Life

Gabriel Zubeir Wako studied Catholic theology and received on 21 July 1963, the sacrament of Holy Orders. In the course of further studies, he specialized in the Department of Pastoral Theology and earned a licentiate in theology.

The first stages of his priestly ministry resulted in the parish and school counseling in the district Gogria. Then he headed for many years a minor seminary and worked as a scout chaplain.

From 1974 to 1979 he served as bishop the diocese of Wau. In 1979 he became coadjutor and 1981 finally Archbishop of Khartoum. Since 1992 he has been Chairman of the Sudanese Bishops' Conference.

Pope John Paul II took him on 21 October 2003 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Atanasio a Via Tiburtina to the College of Cardinals.

On 12 July 2008 he was a member of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People.

During Sunday Mass on 10 October 2010 Zubeir Wako escaped an assassination of a Muslim from the tribe Association of Misseriye.
