Gabriela Zapolska

Gabriela Zapolska, also Gabryela Zapolska ( born March 30, 1857 in Podhajce at Luck (now Ukraine ), † December 17, 1921 in Lviv ), actually Maria Korwin- Piotrowska, was a Polish writer.

Life

Zapolska was the daughter of a wealthy landowner who, joined against the wishes of her parents, 1879 a traveling troupe of actors. She has appeared in many Polish cities and guested 1890-1895 in Paris. In 1902, she founded a drama school in Krakow, they also conducted some years. They also made ​​a name for himself as a theater critic.

As a leading representative of Polish naturalism she was also influenced by Émile Zola and especially criticized in her novels the position of women in society. A part of her work she wrote under the pseudonyms Józef Maskoff and Valery Tomicki.
