Gabriele Klein

Gabriele Klein ( b. 1957 in Wanne- Eickel ) is a German sociologist, cultural and dance scholar.

Life

Gabriele Klein studied 1977-1987 sociology, history, sports, science, contemporary dance and education at the Universities of Bielefeld, Bochum and Essen as well as on the Amsterdam Theatre School ( Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten ). In 1990, she received her doctorate at the University of Bochum in social sciences. Her dissertation was published in 1992 under the title: women body dance. A civilization history of dance. Since the publication of her dissertation Gabriele Klein is one of the pioneers of dance studies in Germany. She qualified in 1998 with the 1999 published study: Electronic vibration. Pop culture theory. In 2002 she was appointed professor at the University of Hamburg. Since 2005 she leads there also the interdisciplinary Center for Performance Studies and the same postgraduate course ( www.performance.uni -hamburg.de ). She has taken numerous international guest professors.

Since 1994 she acts as director of various research projects and organizer of numerous national and international scientific events. Between 1997 and 2001 she was Chair of the Society for Dance Research.

Research

Gabriele Klein's research focuses on body, movement and dance, as well as research on popular culture research, performance studies, gender studies and urban studies. The products developed by their social science and gender- theoretical perspectives, for which it has received international awards were, in subsequent research extended mainly through studies of popular dance forms in youth and pop culture scenes, especially in the techno and hip- hop culture, Latin American Dance and Cultural performances, they mainly studied in everyday life, sports and the arts.

In the recent research focused on the globalization and transnationalization of dance cultures as well as the appropriation and embodiment of dance and movement patterns and their importance in different local contexts and urban cultures. Dance figurations Gabriele Klein sees as particular ways of social interactions in which the physicality of the social and which is the special feature clearly. Dance Research thus becomes a field of study for a sociology of the body. The outlines of this social science discipline has significantly influenced by their research Gabriele Klein.
