Gabriele Wetzko ( born August 28, 1954 in Leipzig ) is a German former swimmer who competed for East Germany.

Career

Your first international launch it in 1967 at the Junior European Championships, where she won the title in the 100 meters freestyle. The following year she competed at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where she won the silver medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay in the GDR. In individual competitions, she finished fourth on 200 -meter freestyle and fifth over 400 meters freestyle.

In the summer of 1969 she swam the first European 100 -meter freestyle in under a minute, when she the European record of the Hungarian Judit Túróczy improved in Budapest to 59.6 seconds.

At the European Championships 1970 in Barcelona, she won, each with a European record, the title in the 100 meters and 200 meters freestyle. They also won the 4 × 100 meter medley relay and the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay with a world record.

Two years later at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 she won the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay silver again and finished fourth in the 100 meters freestyle.

Furthermore, they could set up in their careers several new European records with the East German squadrons on 4 × 100 meter freestyle and 4 × 100 meter medley.
