History

The first written mention is dated 5 May 767 with the Donors Giselbert.

Gabsheim was called in the Middle Ages Geispisheim ( Geispitzheim ); documentary evidence, in addition to many other spellings also Geispodisheim ( Geisbodesheim ) ( 1250) and Gespesheim ( 1484 ). All forms have etymologically down on the place name Gaeu skewer home; in the regional dialect Gespesheim was smoothed with the time phonetically to Gabsheim. Since the place is predominantly Catholic, it is the dialect referred to as God Gahbsem.

The 1250 mentioned " fortified place in Geisbodesheim in the Church" allows to draw conclusions on a fixed abode or a small castle, which has been of Geispitzheim the ancestral home of the noble family. As vassals of the lords of Bolanden and increasingly in the 14th century as vassals of the Counts of Veldenz find the Knights of Geispitzheim (also Knights of Geisbodesheim called ) mention as Burgmannen to Odernheim am Glan ( 1190 ), on the Moschellandsburg at Obermoschel ( 1377, 1421, 1431), at Castle Treuenfels at Altenbamberg ( 1392 ) to Armsheim (14th century) and in the neighboring Bechtolsheim ( early 16th century ). The names of nine inscriptions preserved grave stones from the 14th and 15th centuries document clearly that the Knights of Geispolzheim at that time had their family grave lay in the St. Alban 's Church near their Gabs Heimer headquarters.

In addition to the products from the Gothic period in the Baroque period masterfully composed stone statue of St. Alban is remarkable.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms description reads: " divided by silver and red, above three blue lily side by side, lying below a silver spade blade. "

The depicted and described coat of arms of Gabsheim goes back to a 1507 already handed down court seal. During the spade probably represents a local character, the lilies of the chamberlain von Dalberg, the local lords until the end of the 18th century. The box colors silver and red finally set up a reference to the former Archdiocese of Mainz, to which - like all Rhinehessen places - even Gabsheim belonged.

Culture and sights

Structures

The Catholic parish church in Gabsheim one of the oldest and largest churches in Rheinhessen and is characterized by its dominant position above the site a landmark for the entire environment. The early medieval church was in 1164 by Pope Lucius III. confirmed as the possession of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Alban at Mainz. To date, it is dedicated to St. Alban.

Mainz cathedral vicar George Helwich wrote a first description of the Gabs Heimer church while he was in 1612 for Vintage in Gabsheim. This description appeared in his manuscript collection " Syntagma monumentorum et epitaphiorum "

The 1164 predecessor mentioned more in the late 15th century, a large new building in the Gothic style. Ship and tower of the church of the new building Gabsheim must have been built around the same time as the church Bechtolsheimer, because both churches bear the same stone marks "-L". In Gabsheim it is both carved on the door frame of the bell tower and the church porch. ( How is a documentary record in the state archives Speyer, the Bechtolsheimer church was built in the years 1482-1487. ) As builder is historically and stylistically also a member of the " Meisenheimer school" in question. Whether the design is attributed to Philip of Gmünd itself can not be proven. A recent extension of Gabs Heimer parish church was consecrated in 1768. Regardless, the whole building including the tower kept at its Gothic character. It appears from the outside, especially in the mighty choir with its buttresses. Inside, there is also the choir, with its fine, emblazoned network vaults, which forms the spatial peak. From Gothic period are important works of art of the equipment as well as various on the outside of the parish church grave plates of the wealthy aristocratic families here, including the Barons of Dalberg and the knights of Jack Geispitzheim or Fetzer of Geispitzheim.
