Gabú

Gabú is the largest city in the east of Guinea- Bissau and the capital of Gabú region. Until the independence of Guinea-Bissau, the city bore the name Nova Lamego. It counts 37,525 inhabitants (estimated 2010).

In the city today live mainly Muslim Fulani. Gabú was to the 19th century, the capital of the Mandinka empire Kaabu, but lost with the rise of the Fulbe Fouta Djallon Empire in importance. Today the city is only important as a market town and for trade with the neighboring countries of Senegal and Guinea.
