Gacko

Gacko ( Serbian Cyrillic Гацко, [ gǎtskɔ ] ) is a small city and the center of the large village of the same name in the Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The community Gacko has almost 10,000 inhabitants and is located 50 km east of the city Nevesinje on the plateau Gatačko polje.

History

The area was inhabited as Illyrian times, Gacko other hand, is first mentioned in the 12th century. From the time of the Bogomils are found in the area quite a few cemeteries with the typical " Stecci ".

In early June 1941, it Gacko in a massacre of about 170 ethnic Serbs, which was perpetrated by the Ustasha members.

Economy

The most distinctive feature of the town is the power plant was built in 1977-82 (TE Gacko ), which uses the fantastic nearby lignite deposits. Modernisation of power plant and open pit is planned with the participation of the Czech energy company CEZ. Among other things, another power plant unit will be built with 300 MW.

In the hard to reach villages operated on subsistence agriculture continues to play a major role.

Traffic

Through the district Avtovac runs the main road M20 ( Trebinje - Foca ), which serves as a national link between Dubrovnik and Belgrade and Sarajevo.

Sports

Gacko is the home of the football club FK Mladost Gacko, which plays in the first league of Republika Srpska.
