Gadabay District

Gədəbəy (also Gardabay, russ Гедабек, Гедабекский район or Кедабек, Кедабекский район ) is a rayon in the west of Azerbaijan on the Armenian border. Capital of the district is the city Gədəbəy.

At the rayon the area borders Arzwaschen, an Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict since the controls of Azerbaijan.

Geography

The rayon has an area of ​​1124 km ². In the district there are several mineral springs, the landscape is part of the Lesser Caucasus. There are deposits of copper ore and uranium, as well as marble.

Population

The rayon had 2009 93.600 inhabitants. The population is about 99% of Muslim Azerbaijanis, a minority belongs to the religion of Molokan.

Economy

The region is dominated by agriculture. There are potatoes and fruits as well as wine and grain grown and used in animal husbandry. Since Tsarist gold was mined in the region, first by the company Siemens. The degradation has now been set.
