Gäddede

Gaddede ( South Sami: Tjeadtege ) is a village ( tätort ) in the congregation Strömsund in the extreme northwest of the Swedish province of Jämtland County and the historic county of Jämtland, near the border with Swedish Lapland landscape and the Norwegian province of Nord-Trøndelag. In addition Gaddede is the main town of the parish Frostviken.

Geography

The village is located in the Swedish Fell on the upper reaches of the river system Ströms Vattudal. Both Sweden's largest canyon, the Hällingsåfallet, as well as Sweden's longest cave, Korallgrottan, located near the village.

Place name

The place name is first Gaddede 1763 is as Gädd Edet. He referred first to the land bridge between the two lakes Kvarnbergsvattnet and Hetögeln and was then taken over by the set up there postal and customs station. The name is derived from the Swedish words " Gädda " for pike and "ed " for passage through or along the water. One interpretation is that the waters in the area to be especially rich in this species as pike during their migration upriver can not get any further than here.
