Gadolinium ( III) chloride is a chemical compound selected from the group of chlorides.
Production and representation
Gadolinium ( III) chloride can be obtained by the reaction of gadolinium with hydrochloric acid at 600 ° C.
It can also be obtained through the synthesis and subsequent thermal decomposition of (NH4 ) 2 [ GdCl5 ] at 300 ° C.
Properties
Gadolinium ( III ) chloride is a colorless, hygroscopic, water- soluble compound which crystallizes in a sufficiently pure form of water transparent clear crystals of hexahydrate ( GdCl3 • 6 H2O ) results. The hexahydrate is monoclinic with space group P2 / n and two formula units per unit cell. The anhydrous form is present in a crystal structure with space group P63 / m.
Use
Gadolinium ( III) chloride is used in the synthesis and NMR investigations of paramagnetic GdPCTA and GdPCTA complexes with potential use as contrast agents for NMR.
