Gadzhiyevo

Gadschijewo (Russian Гаджиево ) is a city with 11,068 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the extreme north of the European part of Russia in the Murmansk Oblast.

General

Gadschijewo situated on a bay of the Barents Sea, 32 km north of the regional capital Murmansk. The nearest town Sneschnogorsk six kilometers southwest of Gadschijewo is located.

In Gadschijewo is the naval base Gadschijewo the Russian Northern Fleet. Because of its military importance Gadschijewo is a closed town and is therefore generally not indicated on maps. It belongs together with Polyarny and Sneschnogorsk the closed area Alexandrovsk. To the west lies the Sajda - bay that contains the built with German assistance, the world 's largest stock of radioactive remains of nuclear submarines.

History

Created the site was in 1956 with the founding of the naval base, he was first officially mentioned as a settlement of the Murmansk Oblast on 15 May 1957. Gadschijewo until 1967 had the status of a settlement and called Jagelnaja Guba ( Ягельная Губа ) after the bay to which is the naval base. On October 16, 1967, the settlement was given its present name in honor of the fallen Gadschijew in World War II naval captain Magomet. On September 14, 1981 Gadschijewo received the status of a closed city and was in Skalisty ( Скалистый to the German Rocky ) renamed widespread was the code name Murmansk - 130. In 1999, the city was returned to the name Gadschijewo.
