Gaetano Martino

Gaetano Martino ( born November 25, 1900 in Messina, † 21 July 1967 ) was an Italian politician of the Liberal Partito Italiano and rector of the University of Messina.

Martino, who was from 1948 to 1968 the House of Representatives, served in the government Scelba 1954, first as Minister of Education, but was appointed only a short time later as foreign minister. He remained in this position in the next government of Prime Minister Segni until 1957. In this capacity he was in 1955 initiated the Messina Conference, which took place at his invitation and the foundations of the Treaty establishing the European Community launched two years later. In 1956 he gave a speech to the UN General Assembly as the first Prime Minister of Italy.

1960 and 1961 was Gaetano Martino, head of the delegation of the Italian Parliament in the 15th and 16th UN General Assembly in New York, from 1962 to 1964 he was President of the European Parliament. He is the father of Antonio Martino, who was from 1994 to 1995 Italian Foreign Minister.
