Gaffney is a city in Cherokee County in the north- east of South Carolina in the United States. The town is the administrative headquarters ( County Seat) of Cherokee County and had in 2000, according to the statistical data of the last census, 12,968 inhabitants.

History

The town was from one of Michael Gaffney, an immigrant from Ireland, at a road junction in the early 19th century, opened hotel. First known under the name Gaffney 's Cross Roards, the name Gaffney City has been used since 1872. The place was about 1897 County Seat of Cherokee County which was formed from parts of the previous York, Union and Spartanburg. Gaffney became a center of the textile industry in South Carolina and was, until the 1980s, the backbone of the economic development of the county.

Traffic

The Upstate region is accessed through the airport Greenville- Spartanburg International Airport (GSP International Airport ), the largest South Carolina airport. The Cherokee County is currently the only county in South Carolina, which does not have its own airport.

The town is located off Interstate 85, which connects Atlanta with Charlotte and Interstate 26, which crosses the nearby Spartanburg to Atlantic coast. From Interstate 85 from the distinctive water tower in the shape and color of a peach can be seen ( Peachoid ).

Public transport is carried out by the Gaffney Cab Company.

Attractions

In the old Central School, the Cherokee County History and Arts Museum was established, which shows both the history of Cherokee County and craftsmanship of the Cherokee. For the former post office building, the renovation is planned at a visitor center with a meeting room for the community and art galleries, this half- an architectural competition was announced. A cultural center is planned in the city center. A farmers market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from June to September instead of across from the old post office.

Train

For Gaffney of the Cherokee County School District is responsible. In the village there is the Spartanburg Community College with the Cherokee County Campus and the Limestone College, three private elementary or secondary schools (Secondary School) (Heritage Christian School, Village School of Gaffney, Gaffney Christian Academy ) and the public Gaffney High School whose football team is known nationwide.

Mention on TV

In the U.S. web series House of Cards Gaffney is the hometown of Democratic Congressman Francis "Frank" J. Underwood, who had been selected for the fifth district of South Carolina in Congress. In the 3rd episode of the first season Gaffney is in connection with the death of a 17- year-old girl in a traffic accident while Peachoid to a main setting.
