Gage County, Nebraska

Gage County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Beatrice, which was named after Julia Beatrice Kinney, the daughter of a judge and first president of the Nebraska Association, JF Kinney.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme southeast of Nebraska, on the south by Kansas and has an area of 2,227 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lancaster County, Otoe County, Johnson County, Pawnee County, Jefferson County and Saline County.

History

Gage County was formed in 1855. It was named after the minister William D. Gage.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Gage County 22.993 people in 9,316 households and 6,204 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.69 percent White, 0.32 percent African American, 0.58 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.26 percent from other races groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.85 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 9,316 households out of which 30.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers, 33.4 percent were non-families, 29.2 percent of all households and 15.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.91.

Based on the county the population was spread out 24.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 19.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 34,908, and the median income for a family was $ 43,072. Males had a median income of $ 29,680, women $ 21,305. The per capita income was $ 17,190. 6.6 percent of families and 8.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 9.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 8.0 percent of those 65 years.
