Gagea serotina

Late folding lily ( Gagea serotina )

The Late wrinkles lily ( Gagea serotina ) is a plant which belongs to the lily family ( Liliaceae ).

Description

The Late wrinkles Lily is a petite, hairless, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches stature heights between 5 and 15 centimeters. They usually has two grass -like, about 1 mm wide, fleshy basal leaves that are barely longer than the stem, the stem leaves are narrow - lanceolate.

The terminal, hermaphroditic, with radial symmetry, the threefold flowers are 15 mm wide and wide funnel- shaped with six white, identically shaped bloom cladding ( tepals ). Inside each on each Blütenhüllblatt three brown-red stripes. They form dreifächerige, vielsamige capsule fruits.

Blooms from June to July.

Occurrence

It has a wide distribution in the Holarctic in high mountains and in arctic regions. Firstly, it is in western North America, from Alaska to New Mexico home. On the other hand, the species is native of the Alps to the Balkans.

On acid soils and ridges are the sites most exposed to the wind rocks and buttes. Locations in the Alps are located at altitudes 1600-3100 m above sea level ( subalpine to alpine ).

Ecology

In general, the Late wrinkles lily flowers quite early in the short mountain summer, so she bears her name wrongly.

This type is increasing all the lily family Alps highest. The brown-skinned onion is almost completely surrounded by the remains of last year's leaves trockenhäutigen (antifreeze). On rough, windy locations where insects visit is unlikely to have stamens and pistils at the same height so that the self-pollination is facilitated.

System

The first publication of this kind took place in 1753 under the name ( basionym ) Bulbocodium serotinum by Carl Linnaeus in Species Plantarum, 1, p 294 The name Gagea serotina was by John Bellenden Ker Gawler, in Journal of Science and the Arts. London, 1, 1816, published p.180. For a long time this species was conducted under the name Lloydia serotina in the genus Lloydia. Thus, the genus Gagea is monophyletic, the species of the genus Lloydia were all placed in this genus (M. Zarrei et al. 2009 and 2011 ). Synonyms for Gagea serotina (L.)
