Gaglioppo

Gaglioppo is a very old red variety, which probably originated from Greece. It is primarily grown in the Calabria region (→ Viticulture in Italy). It is believed that Gaglioppo is related to the varieties Aglianico and Magliocco Canino.

This variety grows well in dry climates and achieved a high sugar content (→ Most weight). The wines vinified from it such as the Ciro are thus quite rich in alcohol. Gaglioppo comes in addition to the region Ciro still following quality wines before: Bivongi Donnici, Lamezia, Melissa, Pollino, Savuto Scaviglia, Verbicaro. In the 1990s, an area under vines of 7017 hectares was charged.

Often the wine of Gaglioppo is blended to a small extent with white or red grape varieties.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is woolly haired, white- greenish color with slightly reddish approach. The white- yellowish young leaves are hairy schwachwollig.
  • The medium-sized leaves run from triangular, five-lobed and are only slightly sinuate. The petiole is U- shaped. The leaves are sharply toothed.
  • The conical or pyramidalförmige bunch is medium to large in size, dichtbeerig and shouldered. The roundish to oval berries are medium in size and of black - reddish color. The juicy berries taste neutral.

The grape ripens about 35 days after Chasselas and so very late. The harvest usually takes place between the third week of September and the first week of October. The resistance to the powdery and downy mildew is weak. In contrast, the vine winter drought and frost-resistant.
