At the naming and classification

Due to the complex regional geography and geology of the area compete several different nomenclatures and assignments.

  • On the Austrian map and after the division of the Eastern Alps Alpine clubs (Mountain group number 56) is the umbrella term for the mountain range Gailtaler Alps. These are then - divided in Lienz Dolomites and Drauzug - without figuring in the AVE.
  • According to the local custom Drauzug is the umbrella term for all Kalkalpenstock between Drava and Gail Valley. He then covers the Lienz Dolomites and the Alps Gail Valley.

In the two nomenclatures so the words Drauzug Gail Valley and Alps are interchanged.

  • The mountain group breakdown by Trimmel also used Gailtaler Alps, with the number 3700, as a generic term, it avoids confusion with the term, Drauzug ', and is divided into five equal groups, of which the Lienz Dolomites (No. 3710 ) are one.

The different word usage is a long history of research based on: the term Drava -Sava train as a precursor (for all mountains between Drava and Sava ) coined Theobald von Zollikofer 1859, later authors of standard works such as Eduard Suess (1875 ) and Carl Diener (1899 ) understood the term Drauzug Different. The notion that the Lienz Dolomites, Alps Gail Valley and North Karawanken would be expected to Drauzug, goes back to Leopold Kober 1938. The delimitation by the valley lines of Gail and Drau based in the works of Josef Moriggl (1928) and Hubert Trimmel (1962).

The Drauzug located north of Periadriatic seam and thus belongs geologically to the Southern Alps, but the Eastern Alps. He is a result of its special orogeny south of the Central Alps remaining rest of those Austroalpine Kalkdeckensysteme, most of which was pushed in the formation of the Alps across the central alps away to the north and there was the Northern Limestone Alps.

The Lienz Dolomites its name from the west of it lying Dolomites, but geologically not belong to this formation, they do not consist of dolomite, but resemble the Dolomites in its peak formations. Dolomite formations are found but also to the southeast in the Karawanken again.

Strictly speaking, not part of the view gesteinskundlicher also located between the two valleys of Gail and Drau bedrock solid Goldeck to the system.

This raises their assignment as follows:

  • Orographic south of the striking Längstalzugs as part of the Southern Alps
  • Landschaftsgeografisch in the West as part of the Dolomites in the broadest sense with its rugged karst sticks ( Lienz ), in the East as an independent chain, as a subgroup of the Southern Eastern Alps
  • Geomorphology as a group of the Southern Limestone Alps
  • Tectonically to the central Eastern Alps
  • Petrological - lithogenetisch - with local exceptions - to the ceiling of the Northern Limestone Alps

Adjacent Mountain Ranges

After the AVE:

  • North: Ankogelgroup, Kreuzeckgruppe, Schobergruppe

Landscape

The 100- km-long, narrow in the west mountain range lies between Gail and Drau in the south to the north. In a furrow between the Alps and the Gail Valley Goldeck is the Weissensee, the highest lake in Austria.

Division into five mountain ranges

The Drauzug divided into east-west direction in five by transverse valleys and a longitudinal valley separated Gebirgstöcke:

  • Lienz Dolomites ( about 40 miles) from Kartitscher Saddle (east of Sillian ) to Gailbergsattel at Oberdrauburg ( highest peak 2770 m Great Sand top and Spitzkofel 2718 m, both south of Lienz)
  • Gail Valley Alps in the narrower sense ( about 65 miles): Reißkofelgruppe between Gailberg and Kreuzbergsattel at Greifenburg ( Reißkofel 2371 m, 2275 m Jauken )
  • Latschurgruppe between the Weissensee and the Drauknie in Saxony Castle ( Latschur 2236 m)
  • Spitzegelgruppe southeast of White Lake, between Kreuzberg and lead Graben ( Spitzegel 2119 m)
  • Dobratsch ( Villach Alps, 2166 m) as the eastern foothills of the Alps with the Gail Valley Nature Reserve The bulk.

Other peaks (selection)

  • Gamswiesenspitze ( 2486 m)
  • Lumkofel ( 2287 m)
  • Sattelnock ( 2033 m)
  • Spitzkofel ( 2223 m)

Population and Economy

Within the Drauzuges only three significantly populated areas are: Bleiberg between Dobratsch and Spitzegelgruppe who lived through centuries of lead mining and today the thermal spa tourism, as well as the Stockenboier trench and the area Gitsch -Weissensee, both by tourism ( summer and winter) live.
