GAIS

GAIS ( Göteborgs Atlet & Idrottssällskap, dt: Gothenburg athletes and sports society ) is a Swedish football club based in Gothenburg, currently playing the Superettan in the second highest Swedish league. Due to the green - and-black striped sport shirts of the players the team has received the nickname makrillarna ( " mackerel ").

History

The club was founded in 1894 and in 1919 was named for the first time Swedish champion. Also in 1922 won the GAIS crucial for the championship final against Hammarby IF 3-1. In the founding year of the Allsvenskan in 1924/25 GAIS could win this, but an official championship title there was not it. The same thing happened 1927. Having been established that the winner of Allsvenskan is also a master to GAIS earned the title of 1931 and 1954.

Then GAIS was a so-called "elevator team ", often shuttled between the different leagues. Typical was the year 1955: After a new regime had to dismount three teams in the Allsvenskan. GAIS finished only third last place and was relegated to the then Division 2 second-rate.

Particularly interesting for GAIS and their fans, the local derbies against IFK Göteborg. In 1976 this process using approximately 50,000 viewers a public record for the second Swedish league.

From 1954 to 1968, the club had a hockey department. This took place in the seasons 1957/58 and 1960/61 respectively at the Division 1, of the then highest Swedish league, in part.
