Gajo Petrović

Gajo Petrović ( born March 12, 1927 Karlovac, Croatia, † June 13, 1993 in Zagreb) was a professor of philosophy at the University of Zagreb.

He was the founder of the practice group Zagreb and longtime editor of the magazine and practice contributed to a new interpretation of Marxism, referring in particular to the philosophical writings of the young Marx. This interpretation of Marx fit into a socialism which based on workers' self- management. However, his continued radical critique of dogmatic ideology of the League of Yugoslav Communists led to open conflict, during which the magazine was banned. To practice group included, among others Predrag Marković Mihailo and Vranicki. Contacts were also to Erich Fromm and other humanistic socialists and social critics. After his death he was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb.
