The Gal -Class ( gal, Hebrew wave) consists of diesel-electric submarines, which were built by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd in Barrow-in -Furness (England) for the Israeli navy on the basis of the German U - boat class 206.

History

The Gal - class is the first submarine class, which was built specifically for the Israeli Navy. Until then, Israel had only modernized boats with the design of before and during the Second World War.

Since its commissioning in the 1970s, the boats were always improved to be on the latest technology. As the submarine class 206, on which they are based, they are primarily designed for the control of enemy vehicles in the coastal area, manoeuvrable and reliable ships. For protection against mines and discovery by magnetic anomaly detectors its case of non-magnetic steel is made.

After the Dolphin - class introduction they were initially assigned to the reserve; but then a ship was scrapped, while the two remaining units should be modernized for the purpose of resale in the Howaldtswerken thoroughly.

On October 11, 2007, the INS Gal after Haifa transported to the local Maritime Museum of the Navy and is open to the public. Back boards have been added two doors to facilitate access to the interior. The whereabouts of the third unit is not known.

Units

The last two units were named after two monsters which are described in verse 51, 9 out of the book of Isaiah: Was it not you who hewed Rahab and the dragon pierced? ( Dragon = Hebrew tanin ). These names were already used for two Subtle - class ships.
