Galatina

Gala Tina (Greek Calos Athina, " beautiful Athena " or Galactos Athina, " milk - Athena " ) is a town with 27 084 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in the Puglia region of Italy, 20 kilometers south of the provincial capital, Lecce located.

History

Gala Tina has since July 20, 1793 thanks to a royal decree the municipal law. The city's name Gala Tina and her coat of arms attest to its Greek origin. Traces that provide hints to the Greeks, are now found relatively few. Therefore, the search then forms the focus of historical research in this region. The story here is well documented only from the 14th century and well known.

The coat of arms includes three main components: owl, key and crown. In the foreground the owl, an emblem which is due to the formation epoch of the city. Minerva, goddess of wisdom, was particularly venerated in the region, as many temple ruins, such as in Otranto and Leuca testify.
