Gallarate

Gallarate is an Italian town with 50 961 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Varese, in the Lombardy region.

Location and data

Gallarate located 19 kilometers south of Varese. Through the town flows the river Arnetta. The districts are Arnate, Cajello, Cascinetta, Cedrate, Crenna, Madonna in Campagna, Moriggia, Ronchi and Sciare. The neighboring municipalities are Arsago Seprio, Besnate, Busto Arsizio, Cardano al Campo, Casorate Sempione, Cassano Magnago, Cavaria con Premezzo and Samarate.

The municipality has a highway connection to the A8. The Milan Malpensa Airport is located about five kilometers west of the city.

History

The origin of the place lies in the middle ages. In the 2nd millennium BC, however, settled already people here. With the beginning of the 19th century, the textile industry grew.

Attractions

Worth seeing are the churches of Chiesa di S. Pietro, Collegiate di S. Maria Assunta and the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate are. In the village there is the Museo della Collegiate and the Museo della Società per gli Studi Patri.
